FAQs

What are the levels of (I)GCSE Chinese?

There are three main levels. They are, in increasing difficulty, Chinese (Mandarin) as a Foreign Language, Chinese as a Second Language, and Chinese as a First Language.

They each have different requirements and test criteria. For Second Language and Foreign Language, speaking, reading, and writing are all tested. For First language, only reading and writing are tested.

How much time should my child dedicate to studying for IB or (I)GCSE Chinese tests?

We recommend a minimum of 2 hours (or one session) a week with IYU to studying Chinese. This will help them achieve the necessary long-term effort to effectively learn Chinese.

How can students improve in Chinese at home?

Chinese needs to be learnt over time. This means consuming most forms of Chinese media or content in your spare time,(e.g. shows, books, podcasts) will help significantly in developing students' instincts for the language. The goal is to make learning fun and sustainable. Over time, improvements will become evident.
